Brackett Fred Brown has participated in several of Army Community Services’ mini job fairs at Fort Gordon.

“We’ve hired a number of military spouses and ex-military,” said Brown, a retired first sergeant, who is the recruiting ambassador for T-Mobile. “We prefer military because they are dependable. They know to be at work on time.”

Eight area businesses sent representatives to talk to potential employees at the job fair at the Family Outreach Center Aug. 31.

Kathryn Palmer, who organized the event for ACS, said about 60 people attended Tuesday’s event, which provides an informal environment for employers and people looking for jobs.

“You get to meet people. It’s a nice friendly environment,” she said.

James Miller, market manager and recruiter for Circle K Stores Inc., said that relaxed atmosphere appealed to him.

“It’s one-on-one,” he said.

His company recently participated in a community job fair with hundreds of applicants. He said it was difficult to get to talk to people in that type of setting.

Chanta Wise stopped at Miller’s table to get more information about Circle K job opportunities. She was interested in managerial positions especially now that her youngest child is a recent high school graduate.

“I’m ready to get out and expand,” she said.

Lauren Stanley was another applicant in hopes of securing a job.

“I just graduated from college and relocated here,” said Stanley, who put in an application with the Fort Gordon Federal Credit Union.

The Aug. 31 job fair is the first of two smaller scale events offered through ACS. The next one will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Family Outreach Center. Palmer said a different group of employers would be at the next event.
