While the event may be called Uncommon Jazz, the artists playing in it all have common ties to the Garden City.

“They are either students in the area, live or work in the area, retired here or are from here,” said Karen Gordon, organizer of Sunday’s Uncommon Jazz event at the Augusta Commons, in downtown Augusta.

About a half dozen acts are slated for the show which begins at 6 p.m.

Among the performers will be Loot Smalls and the Grove.

“He (Smalls) grew up here and is active duty military,” she said. “All of the band members are active duty military.”

The headliner for the event is Niki Haris, who recently recorded with Gordon’s jazz trombonist brother, Wycliffe Gordon. Wycliffe is an award-winning musician who played with the Wynton Marsalis Septet and Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. An Augusta native, Wycliffe recently purchased a house in the area and plans to return to his roots.

Uncommon Jazz will feature a variety of jazz sounds, said Karen Gordon.

“The music will be reminiscent of Count Basie, Chet Baker, Louis Prima, Esperanza Spalding, Jamie Cullum and Herbie Hancock,” she said.

Other performers will include Not Gaddy Jazz and the Young Lions.

Prior to the concert at 4 p.m., there will be a discussion on jazz at the conference room at the Commons.

“We will have a panel discussion with musicians and educators,” she said. “I’m really excited about it.”

Tickets are $15 for active duty military and students and $20 for adults and will be available at Aladdin Travel at Fort Gordon through Friday.
