The Holy Spirit, Our Signaler

Chaplain (Maj.) John F. Jensen 442nd Signal Battalion

On a regular basis at Fort Gordon there are induction ceremonies. At these ceremonies enlisted graduates of Advanced Individual Training or officer graduates of the Signal Basic Officer Leadership Course are welcomed into the Signal Corps. These Soldiers have earned the right to wear the Signal Corps Regimental Crest which bears the Corps motto, Pro Patria Vigilans (Watchful for the Country). Often times, at such ceremonies, commanders and command sergeants major will commend these Soldiers on becoming “Signalers.” While there are a variety of individual specialties within the Signal Corps, essentially and fundamentally, a Signaler is the person responsible for establishing and maintaining communication between two or more parties.

The New Testament teaches us that the Holy Spirit is our Signaler. As our Signaler, he communicates information between God and us. Jesus said, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.” (John 14:26). In another place Jesus said, “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.” (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit communicates the will of God and the teachings of Jesus to us.

The Holy Spirit relays information from God the Father to those that are faithful and listening. Think RETRANS, (retransmission)!

This communication mission whom the Holy Spirit performs is not one way; i.e. he does not merely relay messages from God to us; he also relays messages from us to God. The Holy Spirit takes our heartfelt words, our thoughts and our concerns and presents them to God the Father. The apostle Paul writes these words, “The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.” (Romans 8:26-27). What comforting words, even if we may pray wrongly or amiss the Holy Spirit changes or reinterprets our prayers into what they should be and then relays them to God the Father who understands the Holy Spirit perfectly. The Holy Spirit takes our prayers and translates them into a heavenly communication.

The Holy Spirit is our Signaler; He is Pro Fideles Vigilans— Watchful for the Faithful.
