In her stage career, Betsy Wilson-Mahoney has performed in more than 50 shows, but her role in the Aiken Community Playhouse production of Same Time, Next Year is completely different from them all.

‘This is the first nonmusical I’ve ever done,” said Wilson-Mahoney, who plays Doris in the production which will be performed for two weekends at the URS Center for the Performing Arts starts today.

Wilson-Mahoney said she’s always wanted to do the play since seeing the 1978 film version starring Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn.

“I did a show a whole lot like this 15 years ago called I Do, I Do,” she said. “I loved that show because it explores all the different people you are. You are a different person every five years.”

Both shows follow a couple over the course of many years. Same Time Next Year follows George and Doris for 24 years from the early 1950s to the mid-1970s.

For co-star, Danny Lee, who plays George, the evolution of his character is the most difficult part of the show.

“I play George six different ways; the character changes so much,” he said.

Wilson-Mahoney and Lee have performed together in previous shows, and they said their friendship helped them in developing their characters.

“It’s been such a natural thing. We get along so well,” said Lee.

Same Time, Next Year will be performed at 8 p.m., today, Saturday, July16 and 17 and at 3 p.m., Sunday.
