The golf scramble netted $1,700.

In all, 76 golfers turned out for the tournament to include one of the teams from Fort Jackson, S.C., said Jeffery Watts, president of the Fort Gordon Sergeants Major Association.

”What was unique in this tournament were the prizes we chose to raffle off,” said Watts. “We selected walking sticks made out of antennas from the Shakespeare Walking Stick Company. It’s something that would interest Signaleers.”

The tournament began with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. and ended by 5 p.m. Mark Thomp- son, Cliff Burgoyne and Bill Gonzales won first place with an overall score of 59. Chris McCoy, Bruce Wiley, Steven Acevedo and Charles Ponder placed second in the tournament with a score of 59. According to golf regulations, ties are decided upon by a match of the scoring card by individual par-hole scores.

Both the first and second place winners received a trophy and each player received a gift certificate to play 18 holes of golf at Gordon Lakes Golf Courses, according to Richardo Weems, the Fort Gordon Sergeants Major Association’s planner and coordinator.

Keith Wenning, Andy Fabrizio, Curt Gibert and Kayoko Smith took home a trophy after winning third place with a score of 60.

The hole prizes, Longest Drive, were won by Bill Gonzales, hole 5 on Island; Bruce Wiley, won it at hole 1 at Lake.

Bruce Wiley won the Closest to the Pin prize on Hole 6 Island, 9 feet 7 inches; Henry Edwards won it at Hole 8 at Island, 6 feet 5 inches; Ronnie Ross won it at Hole 4 Lake, 5 feet 9 inches, and Steven Acevedo won the prize at Hole 6 Lake, 8 feet 2 inches.

The next major fundraiser for the scholarship program is scheduled for May 1. “We will be bagging groceries from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 1 at the post commissary,” said Watts. “We encourage everyone eligible to use the commissary to come out and support this worthwhile program.”
