Signal Band concert

The U.S. Army Signal Corps Band is performing a concert, “Stage, Screen and Sousa,” at 7 p.m. March 19 at the New Hope Worship Center, 715 S. Old Belair Road in Grovetown. The concert is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. For more information call 791-7041.

Writers Conference

The 35th annual Sandhills Writers Conference runs through March 20 at the Augusta State University campus, located at 2500 Walton Way in Augusta. The conference is open to all persons interested in writing. Kimiko Hahn, who received an American Book Award, for her collection of poetry, The Unbearable Heart, is the keynote speaker. Brandi Bowles, a Howard Morhaim literary agent, will be there as well as Singer-Songwriter Caroline Aiken. Activities include talks on the writer’s craft, advice from regional and national editors and agents, and manuscript consultations. Conference only, daily registration with no manuscript submission is $40 Friday and $25 Saturday. You can register and pay at the door. Recognition Dinner

The 2010 Georgia -Carolina Council Recognition Dinner is scheduled March 23 at 725 Greene St. in downtown Augusta. Doors open at 6 p.m.; program begins at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $20 per adult and $10 per youth if sent in by March 19. After that date, the cost is $30 per adult and $15 per youth at the door. Everyone is welcome to attend. The event will honor Eagle Scout Class of 2009 and the council will present its highest award, the Silver Beaver Award, to one of the civilian volunteers. Recipient’s name will be disclosed at the dinner.

Free education seminar

The Walton Rehabilitation Health System and Bioness is hosting a free educational seminar 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 23 at the Walton Rehabilitation Health System Therapy Gym, located at 1355 Independence Drive in Augusta, for patients and families affected by stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and other neurological disorders. The seminar entitled: “Life After Stroke and Other Conditions: How Bioness Can Help,” will teach about innovative technologies to help improve one’s ability to walk and use fine motor skills. Nutrition programs

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Medical Center‘s Nutrition Care Division is hosting two programs on nutrition this month, which is National Nutrition Month. The first program, “Dietary Supplements - Weight Loss,” is scheduled March 30; “Body Fuels (Food) During Exercise,” is slated for March 31. Maj. Brenda White, a registered dietician at the hospital, will present both programs which will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Nutrition Clinic, located on the third floor of the hospital. MiCA 10K Trail Run

The Augusta Chapter of the Military Intelligence Corps Association is hosting a 10K Trail Run March 27 at Fort Gordon. Entry fee is $25. All runners will receive a T-shirt and a bag with gifts from the sponsors. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Fort Gordon Fisher House. Dependent Child Scholarships

The Army Emergency Relief’s Maj. Gen. James Ursano Scholarship program for dependent children of active, retired and deceased Soldiers has extended its 2010-2011 application deadline to April 1. The scholarship funds can be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies and school room and board either on or off campus as requested by the student. The application is available online at www.aerhq.org and applicants are encouraged to complete applications online. To be considered for the scholarship a student must also submit a copy of his/her Student Aid Report or Institutional Student Information Report by May 1. Spouse Scholarships

The Army Emergency Relief’s Stateside Spouse Education Assistance program has extended its 2010-2011 application deadline to April 1. The SSEAP is a need-based education assistance program designed to provide spouses of active duty and retired Army Soldiers, and widows (ers) of Army Soldiers who died either on active duty or in retired status, and residing in the United States, with financial assistance in pursuing educational goals. To be considered for the scholarship a spouse must also submit a copy of his/her Student Aid Report or Institutional Student Information Report by May 1. Applications are online at WWW.AERHQ. ORG. Bible Study

A Jewish Faith Group Bible study is scheduled at noon every Friday in the Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center’s conference room near the windowed area of Ike’s CafĂ© on the third floor. It’s a brown bag lunch forum; books are provided. The discussion topic for March 19 is Leviticus, Chapters 1-5 in the Torah. Both English and Hebrew versions are read and discussed. Walk to Baghdad and Back

The 35th Signal Brigade’s “Walk to Baghdad and Back…” program is hosting a spring walk 10 a.m. March 20 at Blanchard Park, 4541 Dewey Drive in Martinez, Ga. The walk is a gravel/dirt trail. It may not be stroller friendly; wear proper walking gear. Still up for grabs for the most miles walked by a 35th Signal Brigade family member is a one hour massage by the Augusta School of Massage, courtesy of Balfour Beatty Communities. Participants are encouraged to wear their orange “35th Signal Brigade’s Walk to Baghdad and Back…” T-shirts. Shirts are still available; prices range from $8-12 depending on the T-shirt size. Scholarships

The Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association Augusta-Fort Gordon Chapter is sponsoring several scholarships for high school and college students in the Central Savannah River Area. High school students in the area planning to go to college and major in electrical, chemical, systems or aerospace engineering; mathematics; physics; science or mathematics education; computer science or technology management can apply for the “Any School Scholarships” at the high school level . Applications are being accepted until April 30. Distance Learning or Online programs will not qualify for this scholarship.

The AFCEA Augusta-Fort Gordon Chapter is also offering scholarships to full-time college students pursuing undergraduate degrees from accredited institutions in electrical, chemical, systems or aerospace engineering; mathematics; physics; science or mathematics education; computer science or technology management. Distance Learning or Online programs qualify for this scholarship. Applications for the “Any School Scholarships” at the college level are being accepted until April 30. Scholarships are normally awarded in the $500 to $1,500 range are made payable to the student. Easter Egg Hunt

The Fort Gordon Protestant Sunday School is sponsoring a brunch and Easter program for everyone 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 27 at the Religious Education Center, Bldg. 39713, on 39th Street near 7th Avenue. Living Last Supper

The Living Last Supper, under the direction of Angela Kado-Dickens, is scheduled to be performed at 7 p.m. at the following locations and dates: March 27 at the St. John’s Towers, 724 Greene Street in downtown Augusta; March 28 at the Fort Gordon Youth Development Center, March 31 and April 1 at the Bicentennial Chapel on Barnes Avenue on post. Palm Sunday

Newcomers Organization

The Augusta Area Newcomers organization is a non-profit organization which helps people new to the area get acclimated, make friends and get involved with charitable organizations. The National Science Center’s Fort Discovery in downtown Augusta is sponsoring a Fort Discovery’s Camp Spring Break April 5-9. Civilian Health Promotion program

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center’s Army Public Health Nursing Health and Wellness Center, Bldg. 29605, located on Barnes Avenue, is hosting the Civilian Health Promotion program April 20 - June 17 for Department of Defense civilians. Fitness activities are held from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; health education classes are conducted from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays. Individuals must have supervisor approval and healthcare provider clearance to participate. The Health Promotion Regulation Army Regulation 600-23 allows DoD civilian employees once in their career three hours administrative leave weekly to participate in a physical exercise program like this one. American Legion’s Nursing Scholarship

Applications are available for the American Legion’s $3,000 Eight and Forty Lung and Respiratory Disease Nursing Scholarship for registered nurses. Signal Corps 150th Anniversary

The Signal Corps Regimental Association announces the commissioning of a painting by Don Troiani in honor of the 150th Anniversary of the Signal Corps. The original painting will be unveiled and presented to Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Foley, the U.S. Signal Center of Excellence and Fort Gordon commanding general and Chief of Signal, during the Signal Corps Birthday Ball to be held June 25 at the Gordon Club. The print will then be placed on display in the Signal Corps Museum. These prints are limited. Commissary Case Lot Sale

The Fort Gordon Commissary, located in Bldg. 37200 on the Third Avenue bypass, is hosting a case lot sale from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 21, 22 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 23. Anyone who is eligible to shop at the commissary may make purchases at the case lot sale. For more information call 791-3718.

Tobacco Cessation classes

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center’s Army Public Health Nursing Health and Wellness Center and Behavioral Health offers tobacco cessation classes every month. The programs include medical evaluation for tobacco cessation medications, such as Chantix, Nicotine patches and Zyban. For more information or to register for classes call 787-6756.

BOSS events

The post’s Better Opportunities for Single Service Members program is hosting the Car, Truck 7 Bike Show May 2 at Fort Gordon. Registration is from 10 a.m. to noon May 2; judging begins at 2 p.m. Pre-registration is also being accepted at FortGordon.com. Future upcoming BOSS events include: a Mother’s Day canoe trip and picnic on the Canal in Augusta May 9, Sky Diving May 8-9, Georgia backpacking and camping trip to Jekyll Island May 21-24; deep sea fishing May 28-29 and a historic Banning Mills Tree Top Zipline tour to be held Memorial Day, May 31. Stroke Survivor Support Group

The Augusta Stroke and Outpatient Group meets every second Wednesday of the month from noon to 1 p.m. at the Walton Rehabilitation Health System’s board room, located at 1355 Independence Drive in Augusta. The group offers opportunity for stroke survivors and families to share concerns, questions and support. For more information call 823-5250.
