Scholarships
The Fort Gordon Service Club is once again awarding merit based scholarships to graduating high school seniors and scholarships to adults wanting to continue their education. Applicants for the merit scholarships must be a dependent of an active duty or retired service member holding a valid military ID card or a current FGSC member. The continuing education scholarship is for the spouse of a service member, with a valid ID card, or the spouse of a FGSC member. Applications are available online at www.fortgordonserviceclub.org. Signal Band concert
The U.S. Army Signal Corps Band is performing a concert, “Stage, Screen and Sousa,” at 7 p.m. March 19 at the New Hope Worship Center, 715 S. Old Belair Road in Grovetown. The concert is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. For more information call 791-7041.
Prom gowns
The Fort Gordon Thrift Shop, a Fort Gordon Service Club function, is operated for the benefit and use of all military and civilian personnel. Individuals looking for the right dress for their upcoming prom can find a wide selection of gently used gowns at the Thrift Shop. Prices range for $5 to $40. The shop is located in Bldg. 39102, Brems Barracks area at Avenue of the States and 40th Street (behind the Post Exchange). It is open from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. the first Saturday of the month (October through May). For more information call 791-2779.
Signal Band recital
The U.S. Army Signal Corps Band is hosting its first ever recital series on Fort Gordon. The last performance in the recital series is 3:30 p.m. March 28 at the Good Shepherd Chapel on Barnes Avenue. It is free and open to the public. The series will showcase Signal Corps Band members in solo and small ensemble format, which is not normally seen during usual duty performances. Adaptive Golf clinic
The Walton Foundation for Independence is hosting an adaptive golf clinic from 10 a.m.-noon at The First Tee of Augusta, located at 3165 Damascus Road. The clinic, which is supported by a grant from the United States Golf Association, is scheduled to meet every second Tuesday of the month and will provide people age 15 and older who have acquired disabilities (brain injuries, stroke, spinal cord injury, amputation and blindness) with the opportunity to play golf using adaptive equipment. St. Patrick’s Day trip
Better Opportunities for Single Service Members is hosting a trip March 12-14 to the St. Patrick’s Day celebration in Savannah, Ga. Trip departs 6:30 p.m. March 12 from the BOSS Headquarters, Bldg. 28320, on Lane Avenue. Cost includes transportation to and from Savannah, two nights lodging and shuttle service from hotel to downtown Savannah for all the festivities. Individuals must be 21 years old, married Soldiers are welcome and can sign up for tours at a discounted rate. Cost is $95 per person with two-person occupancy and $90 per person with four-person occupancy. Pre-registration is required; space is limited. For more information, contact Spc. Spring Break Camp
The National Science Center’s Fort Discovery in downtown Augusta is sponsoring a Fort Discovery’s Camp Spring Break April 5-9. Youngsters can choose between two themes: “The Science of Sports,” or “Science Soup.” Cost is $150 for Fort Discovery members; $175 for non-members. Well-Fit program
The Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center’s Army Public Health Nursing Health and Wellness Center is hosting the “Well-Fit” program. It includes healthcare professional one-onone diet and weight management counseling services. The program is tailored to the individual’s needs and includes: baseline weight and body fat assessment, cholesterol and blood pressure monitoring, goal setting and monitoring progress, behavior and lifestyle modification counseling. Stress Management
The Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center’s Army Public Health Nursing Health and Wellness Center is offering “Stress Management for Initial Entry Training Students,” from 4 to 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays. Classes are offered in a series with instruction provided by the occupational therapy personnel at DDEAMC. Soldiers may attend on a walk-in basis with no advance scheduling required. Healthy Habits
The U.S. Army Child, Youth and School Services is sponsoring “Healthy Habits” classes from 5 to 5:45 p.m. every third Thursday of the month at the Youth Center, Building 45410, on 46th Street. For more information contact Brad McConnell, the CYSS Sports and Fitness director, at 791-5104.
Hearts Apart
Hearts Apart is for individuals and families separated due to deployments, temporary duty assignments and remote tours. Services offered include: on-post and off-post resource information, personal support and group activities. The group meets the third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Family Outreach Center, located behind the post library. Childcare is provided free of charge to all eligible families. Living Last Supper
The Living Last Supper, under the direction of Angela Kado-Dickens, is scheduled to be performed at 7 p.m. at the following locations and dates: March 27 at the St. John’s Towers, 724 Greene Street in downtown Augusta; March 28 at the Fort Gordon Youth Development Center, March 31 and April 1 at the Bicentennial Chapel on Barnes Avenue on post. Free education seminar
The Walton Rehabilitation Health System and Bioness is hosting a free educational seminar 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 23 at the Walton Rehabilitation Health System Therapy Gym, located at 1355 Independence Drive in Augusta, for patients and families affected by stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and other neurological disorders. The seminar entitled “Life After Stroke and Other Conditions: How Bioness Can Help,” will teach about innovative technologies to help improve one’s ability to walk and use fine motor skills. Procession of the Palms

Commissary Case Lot sale
The Fort Gordon Commissary, located in Bldg. 37200 on the Third Avenue bypass, is hosting a case lot sale from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 21, 22 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 23. Anyone who is eligible to shop at the commissary may make purchases at the case lot sale. For more information call 791-3718.
American Legion’s Nursing Scholarships
Applications are available for the American Legion’s $3,000 Eight and Forty Lung and Respiratory Disease Nursing Scholarship for registered nurses. Signal Corps 150th Anniversary
The Signal Corps Regimental Association announces the commissioning of a painting by Don Troiani in honor of the 150th Anniversary of the Signal Corps. The original painting will be unveiled and presented to Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Foley, the U.S. Signal Center of Excellence and Fort Gordon commanding general and Chief of Signal, during the Signal Corps Birthday Ball to be held in June at the Gordon Club. The print will then be placed on display in the Signal Corps Museum. These prints are limited. Writers Conference
Augusta State University is hosting the 35th annual Sandhills Writers Conference March 18-20 at their university campus, located at 2500 Walton Way in Augusta. The conference is open to all persons interested in writing. Kimiko Hahn, who received an American Book Award, for her collection of poetry, The Unbearable Heart, is the keynote speaker. Brandi Bowles, a Howard Morhaim literary agent, will be there as well as Singer-Songwriter Caroline Aiken. Activities include talks on the writer’s craft, advice from regional and national editors and agents, and manuscript consultations. Conference only registration, no manuscript is $110 for all three days. Daily registration with no manuscript submission is $40 Thursday, $40 Friday and $25 Saturday. Recognition Dinner
The 2010 Georgia –Carolina Council Recognition Dinner is scheduled March 23 at 725 Greene St. in downtown Augusta. Doors open at 6 p.m.; program begins at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $20 per adult and $10 per youth if sent in by March 19. After that date, the cost is $30 per adult and $15 per youth at the door. Everyone is welcome to attend. The event will honor Eagle Scout Class of 2009 and the council will present its highest award, the Silver Beaver Award, to one of the civilian volunteers. Recipient’s name will be disclosed at the dinner.

Tobacco Cessation classes
The Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center Army Public Health Nurse’s Health and Wellness Center and Behavioral Health offers tobacco cessation classes every month. Stroke Survivor Support Group
The Augusta Stroke and Outpatient Group meets every second Wednesday of the month from noon to 1 p.m. at the Walton Rehabilitation Health System’s board room, located at 1355 Independence Drive in Augusta. The group offers opportunity for stroke survivors and families to share concerns, questions and support. For more information call 823-5250.
BOSS events
The post’s Better Opportunities for Single Service Members program is hosting the Car, Truck 7 Bike Show May 2 at Fort Gordon. Registration is from 10 a.m. to noon May 2; judging begins at 2 p.m. Pre-registration is also being accepted at Fort- Gordon.com. Future upcoming BOSS events include: a Mother’s Day canoe trip and picnic on the Canal in Augusta May 9, Sky Diving May 8-9, Georgia backpacking and camping trip to Jekyll Island May 21-24; deep sea fishing May 28-29 and a historic Banning Mills Tree Top Zipline tour to be held Memorial Day, May 31.
