This year’s Fort Gordon annual Youth Pheasant Hunt offered a new experience – hunting in snowy conditions. Although 20 youths signed up for the event only 15 made it out to the hunt held Feb. 13 at the Tactical Advantage Sportsman’s Complex.
The annual hunt was originally set up to take place at Training Area 23, but the unexpected winter storm which hit the Central Savannah River Area the day before caused all roads and training areas to be closed. Despite a two hour delay the young hunters were eager to get started.
Following a safety briefing from the post’s Hunter Education instructors and practice on the skeet range youngsters set out with a parent or guardian in frigid temperatures and four inches of snow to bag some birds.
At the conclusion of the event each hunter took home three ring-necked pheasants.
