Portraying teens from a century past has its challenges for cast members of the Aiken Community Playhouse production of Meet Me in St. Louis.
“One of the things I’ve noticed is that kids today are a lot more upfront with their emotions,” said Shannon Huey, director of the production, which opens Friday, Feb. 26, at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts on Newberry Street in Aiken. “They’ve had to work on being gentile and reserved.”
The story, made popular in the 1940s by a movie starring Judy Garland, features a family living in St. Louis during the 1904 World’s Fair. The father is up for a big promotion, but his teen-age children don’t want to leave St. Louis so they set out to sabotage his promotion.
“It’s a really good family show,” said Gray Johnson, one of the actresses in the show. “It has a good ending.”
While the cast has had to work to become more refined, members have found multiple things they like about the show.
“They are loving the costumes,” said Huey.
