Hope Scholarship details

Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship was initiated to help Georgia residents fund academic education opportunities beyond high school.

Prior to HB 484, children of Active Duty personnel were not automatically considered residents for the purpose of in-state college tuition rates. On May 7, 2009, Governor Sonny Purdue signed into law Georgia HB 484. The bill amended the original Georgia law (Title 20, Education) pertaining to the HOPE Scholarship, and “provides that dependent children of Military Personnel stationed in Georgia on Active Duty shall be deemed to meet the residency requirements for purposes of HOPE scholarships and grants.” The bill took effect July 1.

Potential students interested in attending college in Georgia must complete the Georgia HOPE Scholarship and Grant Application in hard copy or online at:

www.gacollege411.org. There are several questions on the application which must be annotated to reflect the Active Duty status of the Service Member and his/her current “home state of record.” Conversations with Augusta State University Financial Aid personnel revealed that students planning to attend college at ASU must also complete the Non-Resident Fee Waiver form available at: www.aug.edu/registrar_va/forms/Non- Resident.pdf.

Students applying for the HOPE Scholarship still have to meet the eligibility requirements of having graduated from a Georgia High School in 1993 or later with a “B” average and must be enrolled as a degree-seeking student in an eligible college in Georgia.

Additional information may be found at
