Navy Women steal championship
In a stroke of luck or raw skill Fort Gordon’s Navy Women intercepted the Warriors’ pass, ran the field and made a touchdown during the 7 p.m. playoff game held Nov. 4 at the post’s soccer field. Final score was Navy Women 6, Lady Warriors 0.
At the 6 p.m. game 369th Signal Battalion beat Navy 2-7. The win forced Army to defend its chance for first place in the 2009 Women’s Flag Football Championship. Both teams put up a good defense, but in the end there can only be one champion.
At the conclusion of the games, Neil Smith, Fort Gordon’s Recreation Division Sports, Fitness and Aquatics Branch sports coordinator, presented trophies and medallions. Navy took home the first place trophy; Army won the second place trophy.
Capt. Michael Fisher, Navy Information Operations Command Georgia’s commanding officer, who attended both games, had this to say about the playoff. “The game was a close-run thing,” he said. “Frankly, I thought Army had the better team, but they had to be the better team right up the final whistle.
“That intercept and touchdown on the final play, however, unlikely, clinched us a win,” added Fisher. “I credit our ladies for not giving up right down to that final play. While I am thrilled at winning the Championship, I have a great deal of respect and empathy for our opponents. The grace the Army showed during the post-game celebration was a model of good sportsmanship. Hoorah, Army!”
