Around Town
Organizers of events scheduled this weekend are hoping for clear blue skies as several outdoor activities are planned.
It’s all about the out-of-doors at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park this weekend as two events are planned.
A dawn walk will take park goers out in the swamp at 5:30 a.m. Saturday where they can watch the sun rise among the multitude of wildlife. As the sun begins to peer through the Spanish moss, the nocturnal wildlife takes its place in the nooks and crannies of the park.
And if you brought your camera, stick around until 9 a.m. when photographer Ed Belinski will teach a class on basic nature photography.
The dawn walk is $3 for park members and $5 for non-members; while the photography class is $5 for park members and $8 for non-members. Registration is required. Call (706) 828-2109 for more information.
In Beech Island, the historic antebellum home and grounds of South Carolina Gov. James Henry Hammond will be the site of a special program from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Not only was the plantation the home of the governor and his family, but it was the home of four generations of slaves and freed African-Americans who worked on the plantation and in the home.
A history of those who have lived on the site and the contributions they’ve made to the surrounding community will be part of the program, The African- American Experience.
“Over the past few months we’ve been uncovering new information about the Wigfall and DeWalt families who lived and worked at Redcliffe,” said park interpreter Elizabeth Laney in a prepared statement. “Both families eventually moved to Augusta, where the Wigfalls became prominent members of the local community. Members of both families are buried today in Cedar Grove Cemetery.”
The program will include a tour of the plantation home and the slave quarters.
Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students between the ages of 6 and 16.
