The 7 to 8 a.m. hour is a hectic one on Fort Gordon. In addition to numerous drivers traveling on post in order to start their work day, children from the residential areas are making their way to school. On the chilly, overcast morning of Oct. 16, Soldiers from the 447th Signal Battalion helped them get there safely during an International Walk to School event.
The program, called iWalk, held around the country during the month of October, is designed to promote health and safety among America’s children.
“We’re promoting health, environment and safety to the students,” explained Command Sgt. Maj. Arthur Swingler, 447th Signal Battalion. “First there are the health and environmental benefits of walking instead of riding in a car or bus. There are also safety issues, such as staying on sidewalks and looking both ways before crossing the street, that we teach them.”
Swingler said the program also gives Soldiers the opportunity to interact with students, a fact which many parents were excited about.
“My husband is in the Navy, so this is our first time on an Army post,” said parent Tricia Mold. This lets our child see a different side of the military, one not so familiar. Plus, it’s nice to see your child walked to school by the Soldiers. You know they’re safe and secure.”
