Pastoral Care Week is observed October 26-30, 2009 and provides an opportunity to remember that our Chaplains are resources to staff as well as patients. All of us know that illness and hospitalization are stressful events in the lives of our patients and their Families. Chaplains help provide the essential caring, comfort and presence that aid healing and grief. This year’s theme, “Healing Starts Here,” touches on the core of spiritual wellness: loving and embracing the adventure of growing in God.

Pastoral Care Week speaks to the deep spiritual concerns of every person: the discovery of deeper meaning in the face of finitude; reconciliation to bodily limitations; exploration of more meaningful relationships with others; and the connection to aspects of and in the universe beyond us.

Pastoral care providers help to nurture the spirits of patients and Family members. At times Family members are confronted with illness and a Family member is hospitalized. Both patient and Family member may begin to reflect on their own lives and their own vulnerability calling them to take a deeper look at the suppressed emotions surrounding past hurts. While we listen and are present we are patient with the slow process of healing and growth, understanding that they may be wondering how God could possibly be in the midst of such hurt, confusion, abusive situations and conflict. When we help a person pause and believe that God is breathing strength into their spirit, we help them approach their lives with hope and courage.

True healing often occurs when all aspects of a person are taken into account - body, mind and spirit. The Department of Ministry and Pastoral Care focuses on supporting the spiritual and emotional needs of patients, Family members and staff.
