Looking for Inspection Standards?
Fort Gordon Inspector General, Lt. Col. Bernadette Hanley
This is our first “IG Corner” update— during these recurring monthly updates, we will highlight selected regulations, share current trends of our assistance efforts, and use the opportunity to “Teach and Train” – which is one of our four IG key functions. The other functions are to “Assist, Investigate, and Inspect.” From time to time, the IG from South East Regional Medical Command, Lt. Col. Shauna Snyder will provide insights into her area of expertise serving all MEDCOM personnel including dental and veterinary assets.
Army Regulation 1-201 (Army Inspection Policy) governs the planning and conduct of all inspections and provides an example of how to establish an Organizational Inspection Program (OIP). OIP is the “umbrella” program that covers Command Inspections, IG Inspections, and Staff Assistance Visits and provides the commander a means to de-conflict internal and external inspections with other required activities.
As our inspectors prepare for the 1st Quarter FY10 inspection (Mitigating the Spread of Communicable Disease), we thought it may be helpful to share the resources we will use to develop inspection objectives. These regulations are available at www.usapa.army.mil
TRADOC Regulation 350-6 Annex 3-35 “Preventing Communicable Illnesses” AR 40-5 “Army Medical Department Facilities/Activities
DA PAM 40-5 “Preventive Medicine”
During this period of heightened awareness of H1N1, many recommendations on mitigation of communicable diseases are publicized, but keep in mind that during a formal inspection, only official regulations are used as standards. Recommendations may be incorporated into the Best Business Practice observations, but can’t become official findings in an inspection report.
