Bryan Gamble DDEAMC Commanding General Do you know which sexually transmitted disease affects nearly 50% of sexually active men and women at some point in their lives? It is the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). It is estimated that 20 million Americans are currently infected with the HPV, with another 6.2 million new cases being diagnosed each year.

The vast majority of those infected do not know it, and have no symptoms or health effects from the virus. There are over 70 different types of HPV, with a few particular certain strains causing 90% of genital warts and 70% of cervical cancer. The body’s immune system usually fights off HPV naturally; however, the virus can still cause normal cells to grow abnormally.

A vaccine is available that can help protect females from the four types of HPV that cause the majority of genital warts and cervical cancer. It is recommended for girls ages 11-12, before the onset of sexual activity, but is approved for females ages 9-26. Sexually active females may still benefit from the vaccination, even if they’ve already been infected with HPV.

The vaccine is given in three doses over a six-month period. It is important to receive all doses of the vaccination in order to receive the full benefit. Multiple studies have demonstrated the vaccine’s safety and lack of clinically significant side effects, the most common side effect being pain at the injection site.

While the vaccine is a preventive measure, it is still important for women to have cervical cancer screening done every year unless otherwise directed by their health care provider, beginning at age 21 or three years after beginning sexual activity. The vaccine does not protect against pregnancy or any other sexually transmitted diseases.
