Fort Gordon hosts job fair
After being laid off from her job a few months ago, Pam Schrader dusted off her resume and headed to Tuesday’s job fair at the Army Reserve Center.
“I’m looking for jobs in accounting and financial,” said Schrader, an Army spouse, who was among the hundreds of job seekers who crammed into the center for the annual event sponsored by Army Community Service and the Army Career and Alumni Program.
More than 40 employers were on-hand for the event; among them were AutoZone, DataPath Inc. the FBI, the IRS, Sonoco Products, Edward Jones, Lockheed Martin Corp. and General Dynamics.
Kathryn Palmer, with Army Community Service, said there were many different types of jobs open, and that employers were looking to place applicants quickly.
“They don’t come unless they have jobs available,” she said.
Jobs available ranged from tax preparers and law enforcement to IT maintenance and commercial truck drivers.
While the fair was open to the community, a special emphasis was placed on service members and their Family.
Soldiers in the Warrior Transition Battalion were allowed access to employers prior to the start of the fair.
“The Fort Gordon community is very supportive of the WTBs and gave them that dedicated time,” said Lt. Col. Everett Sharpe, battalion commander.
Among the employers were several participants in the Army Spouse Employment Partnership program.
“We’re here to help out people who are PCSing or to hire spouses,” said Vernita Montgomery of AAFES, an ASEP partner. AAFES jobs open include mainly retail and fast food positions. A new Taco Bell will be opening soon in the Food Court, providing new jobs.
