Correction

In the September 25, 2009 issue of The Signal, the article titled “Everyone must register on-post privately owned weapons” provided incorrect information regarding hunting rules on Fort Gordon.

To clarify the rules:

Everyone must register on-post privately owned weapons. Firearms, hunting/ target bows, crossbows, pellet and BB guns will not be loaded, fired, or used within any housing area or cantonment area of the installation; within 100 yards of any public highway, street, or Fort Gordon named street or numbered area, managed waters, building, or similar structures; or any aircraft landing facility; or ammunition storage area; or be discharged from a vehicle.

Fort Gordon Hunting, Fishing, Trapping and Horseback Riding Regulation 420- 5 states (page 5, item c):

Hunting is prohibited within 100 yards of any lake, pond (excluding Beaver Pond), named roadway, or building. An exception to this restriction is duck hunting on Union Mill, Lower Leitner and Rachel’s lakes during duck seasons. All duck hunters will contact the on duty game warden for additional duck hunting information.

Hunting within 200 feet of any known or marked (trees are marked with two, 5-inch white bands painted on the cavity tree approximately 4 feet from the base) Redcockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis) cavity tree is prohibited.

Any one not following the 100 yard rule will be subject to the rules of violation stated in 420-5, Section 15, Violations of fish and wildlife laws, rules, and regulation.

The 100 yard rule here at Fort Gordon is established for the safety of citizens and those serving our country.

This rule will be honored and strictly enforced.
