Fort Gordon begins post-wide recreation overhaul
With 40 intramural basketball and 24 volleyball teams, William Wren has a problem.
"We only have two gyms with basketball courts," said Wren, Recreation Division chief of Fort Gordon's Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, who hopes this problem will be alleviated when Gym 6 on Barnes Avenue is renovated.
"Renovation will begin in September, and we will be re-claiming it," he said.
Gym 6 isn't the only recreation spot on Fort Gordon on the renovations' list.
From the gyms and pools to the riding stables and Pointes West recreation area at Lake Thurmond, construction is already underway on some projects or set to begin soon on others.
A new conference center and recreational vehicle park are part of upgrades at Leitner Lake.
Often, groups will come out to Leitner Lake and want a common meeting area. The conference center will be about 4,000 square-feet and will be available for rentals for wedding receptions and Family reunions or as a training facility.
Wren said construction should begin after Labor Day and be completed by June 30, 2010.
At Lake Thurmond, there are several projects including the construction of a new RV park and marina with fuel station.
"We're excited about that," said Wren.
Also, a new spray ground will be created near the Courtyard with a projected opening set for next summer.
Spray grounds are popular alternatives to pools, he said. "You don't have to be able to swim to use a spray park," he said. The indoor pool is currently closed for upgrades to the climate control system with a re-open date in January.
