The stationary bicycle is a staple of nearly every gym and one of the most commonly used cardiovascular exercise machines. However, over time, the monotony of continually peddling with no change in rhythm or scenery can make even the most die-hard exercise enthusiast think twice about hopping on a bike.

Fortunately, an exciting alternative has become one of the most successful exercise classes available anywhere, including the Fort Gordon Fitness Center.

"The cycling class, or 'spinning' is essentially an indoor version of outdoor cycling training," said Amber Gracey, class coordinator at the Fort Gordon Fitness Center and proprietor of Gym Dog Fitness. "In addition to pedaling, the instructor leads the riders though sprints, climbs and jumps, all simulating cross country riding."

The class, which runs 45 minutes per session offers an intensive aerobic and anaerobic workout that Gracey says can be tailored to fit any fitness level.

"Riders can adjust the tension on the bike to work as hard as they want to, and the movements don't require a lot of coordination. This means anybody can do it as long as they're willing to try," she said.

The cycling course has proven so popular that it easily outnumbers any other program offered at the fitness center. Currently, there are 15 classes a week averaging 15 to 20 riders per class. Gracey says the popularity is due primarily to the health benefits.

"Riders will burn between 500 and 1,000 calories in a 45-minute session," she said. "You walk out of that class and you know you had a workout. But it's not just effective as a weight loss method. It also helps you maintain a healthy heart. Doctors suggest a minimum of 20-30 minutes of moderate to strenuous cardiovascular exercise at least three times a week. This cycling class easily provides that and more."

Resistance on the bikes can be changed throughout the session which means riders can determine the intensity of their workout individually.
