Some Medical College of Georgia occupational therapy students got some grueling training at the hands of Paralympian Scott Winkler at the Fort Gordon Fitness Center.

As part of a six week contemporary practice course, the students work out with Winkler and his Warrior Transition Battalion fitness class through a partnership the organization Champions Made from Adversity has with Fort Gordon, said Judie Thompson, WTB occupational therapy supervisor.

"They are learning about program development and how they can adapt," said Thompson, who taught at MCG before coming to Fort Gordon recently.

Winkler's class provides two hours of core, cardiovascular and weight training to Soldiers in the WTB. Because of their injuries or wounds, the class has to be adapted for them. Winkler is a Marine who was wounded in Iraq.

"People have different types of injuries. Some (weight) machines are good," said Heather Whitehead, one of the MCG students.

June 15 was their first class with Winkler. The first week the students observed his technique. In the second week, they participated.

"Scott does a complete workout," said Leia Curry, another student. "He's awesome."

Thompson said she sees the program as a win-win for all involved. Not only does it help the students, but it aids the Soldiers.

"It integrates them with the community," she said.
