Staff Sgt. Timothy Anderson knew he would be well taken care of when he had to go back to the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center Active Duty Unit.

"The hospital is great," said Anderson, who first arrived at the unit in 2005 and is back again receiving follow-up care for injuries he received in a motorcycle accident.

But it's not just the hospital staff which takes care of the wounded and injured Soldiers, he said. The civilian community also supports them.

"They are always trying to stuff you with food," said Anderson, who added he didn't mind that type of treatment at all.

On Oct. 29, eight service members from the active duty wing had an opportunity to picnic with members of the Good Sam RV Club No. 44 at North Augusta's Riverview Park.

Fried chicken and macaroni and cheese were just a few of the items on the menu.

"We wanted to do a little something for you," club member Ray Damato told the service members before they began eating. "If any of you ever want to go camping, let us know. We like to talk, and we like to eat."

Therapist Eric Gray said the Oct. 29 outing was just one of the many ways people in the community have shown their support.

Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga. is a huge supporter providing monthly birthday cakes for the patients and golf lessons. The organization has even donated a van to the unit.

Other church, veterans and civic groups provide outings for the service members. They give gift cards for them to use and plan special events, Gray said. Gray said the patients enjoy the outings.

"It's good for morale. Any time they can get out of the hospital, it keeps their spirits up. A lot of guys just stick to their rooms," he said.
