They are holding a roller derby boot camp from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Nov. 2, 9 and 16 and also in the evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 5, 12 and 19 at Skateland of Augusta which is located at 2451 Windsor Spring Road just off of Tobacco Road. Women age 18 and older are welcome to tryout.

If you like participating in a fast paced sport, you just might make a good jammer, blocker, or pivot on the team.

During the boot camp participants will learn to squat, how to dodge, jump over people and fall to prevent injuries.

The $20 fee for the boot camp covers skate rental and the use of loaner safety gear. If you have knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, a mouth guard, and/or a helmet, bring them with you. Pre-registration is encouraged. Contact the team's recruiter at

joinscs@soulcitysirens.coms.

The all-female team was started in January 2008 in Augusta by Jessica Thompson one of the librarians at the Woodworth Consolidated Library on post. The first bout for Soul City Sirens in the upcoming 2009 Season is in January.

The team practices twice a week on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at Skateland of Augusta.

Roller Derby is a sport born during the Depression. Today the American-invented contact sport has leagues in Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and New Zealand.
