Tribute to the Fallen

2008-10-10 / Sports

The fourth annual "Tribute To The Fallen" will begin this year at 9 a.m., Sunday,

Oct. 19, on Barton Field across from the Library on Rice Road.

Navy, Marines and other military branch service members will run around Barton Field, 24 hours per day for 20 days, to honor the 1050 Navy and Marine personnel who have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The event will begin with the commanding officer of the Fort Gordon Marine Corps Detachment, Capt. Scott Gurley, ordering the 21 rounds to be delivered to the firing detail that will be formed on Nov. 7. As each runner completes the three-mile lap, the 21 rounds will be passed on to the next runner.

The final lap will be run by the entire group of Sailors and Marines who participated in the event, plus supporting Army units and commanders.

The tribute will end at 3 p.m. on Nov. 7, when the 21 rounds are handed to a firing detail, and the 21-gun salute is rendered.

All are invited to participate in honoring those who have sacrificed their lives in the name of freedom.
